Who We Are
A Note From Our Founder
My name is David Mebane and I am a lifelong traveler that experienced my first international trip as a 2nd grader, and I haven’t stopped since. I founded Fat Tire Tours in Paris, France in 1999 and love showing people around the City of Light. That passion has grown to include other incredible destinations around the globe, and this is the genesis for Kairos Tours. Even after 25 years I still love leading others in their pursuit of creating experiences and memories that last a lifetime.
I live in Austin, Texas with my wife Kelly, and our son Weston and daughter Caroline. However, we spend as much time as we can elsewhere since there is nothing better than an adventure with family and friends!

We redefine group travel by combining full financial transparency, cost-efficient planning, student-centered leadership development, and tech-driven coordination through a user-friendly app — all designed to create streamlined, empowering, and insight-rich travel experiences.
Full Accounting Transparency
Unlike other student travel companies, Kairos Tours provides complete financial transparency. Clients receive a detailed line item breakdown of expenses, including all available receipts. We account for every dollar spent. Kairos Tours never marks up an expense or charges a ‘percentage of spend’ fee – keeping our interests aligned.
Elevated Student Experience
The beauty of any school trip is the opportunity for the student to build self-confidence, problem solve, and learn how to navigate in a new environment. The adults are present to keep students safe, but otherwise should ‘lead from behind’. We strongly encourage student leadership throughout the trip.
Efficient Group Travel
Group travel can be a difficult and frustrating experience as the group is only as fast as the slowest participant. Instead, we break into smaller groups of roughly 4-5 students and 2-3 adults. This small group travel style moves more efficiently (and happily!), allowing students to focus on their unique interests.
Trip Curation
All of our trips are 100% customizable. We begin by meeting with faculty to understand the goals and vision for the trip, then craft a detailed itinerary with tailored options for review and revisions. This collaborative approach ensures total alignment with the school’s objectives, goals, and vision for the trip.
Things We Avoid
Travel companies that keep entire groups together and follow a yellow umbrella around cities (‘amoeba style’) are missing opportunities and making unfortunate use of their client’s valuable time. We also avoid using a coach as transportation, hotels outside of the city center, and shopping mall food courts.
